DONAL LUNNY
Musical Director
Donal Lunny has been an integral part of the renaissance and evolution of Irish music for over thirty years. Aside from his own musical accomplishments he is a highly sought after producer, with his most well known works including the music for the award TV series ‘A River of Sound’ with Mark Knopfer, the anthology album ‘Common Ground’ and work he has produced with artists such as Christy Moore, Loreena McKennitt, Sharon Shannon, Kate Bush, Sinead O’Conner, Mary Black, Elvis Costello and Bono of U2 being just a few. Donals style can be described as experimental and pioneering, punctuated by a tenacious quest for musical excellence. Above all his style would be considered collaborative, with an important thread visible throughout his entire career being his exploration in order to discover the similarities inside of differences, to musically experiment with having different worlds no matter how distant, co-exist and collaborate musically. Through Donal’s desire to find the common ground within a culture’s past and its present, extraordinary unions between the two have been created through his leadership with evidence of this found in works such as the Common Ground album, the band Moving Hearts and his recent work with the Trans-Atlantic Sessions, making it no surprise that he is involved as deeply as he is with this project Green Fire Islands.
